COYOTE BUTTES

Simply put, Coyote Buttes’ sandstone structures are dramatic and unique. They are hidden away in a Federal Wilderness Area in Arizona which allows only twenty visitors per day. Ten permits are issued online three months in advance and all are immediately taken, primarily by Europeans.

The structures provide the most extraordinary range of shapes and colors. I have photographed the main areas of the Buttes, North and South, on a dozen different occasions. I would go back and forth between color and black & white photography, primarily driven by sky conditions. While I believe that the B & W photographs are the most striking, customers prefer the color prints, in particular the larger sizes. Most published images of the area attempt to hide the location, which I find selfish. I have included all necessary information in the Source section. The North section includes the sandstone structure called The Wave, but the South section has even stranger formations.
